Southern Comfort was born in New Orleans and first produced in 1874. Whiskey at this time tasted rough and had inconsistent flavors. In order to produce a better tasting whiskey, bartender M.W.Heron added vanilla, ripe orange, cinnamon, lemon peel and cherry extract to the harsh whiskies being sold in the bars of New Orleans at the time. Southern Comfort combines the dark spirit qualities of a whiskey with the versatile, mixable qualities of vodka.
